Lapis Lazuli Particles on the Turin Shroud: Microscopic Optical Studies and SEM-EDX Analyses

نویسندگان

چکیده

We have studied by optical microscopy and SEM-EDX lapis lazuli particles adhering to a sample of the Turin Shroud. A total number seventy (and sub-particles) were found on surface this sample, characterized in details: they are little (of between 0.1 15 μm maximal length), blue colour, with spectrum chemical elements identical that Lazuli mineral. hypothetise these residues painting layers covered initially

SEM-EDX and SEM-CL to Characterize Lapis Lazuli from Different Provenances

Lapis lazuli has been used for more than 7000 years for the manufacture of precious objects and jewels. The main quarries for this stone are still active in Afghanistan, but there are other quarries that could have been exploited since antiquity in the Pamir mountains (Tajikistan), in Pakistan and in Siberia. For this reason a provenance study of lapis lazuli could provide answers to some impor...

Optical and chemical characteristics of the mineral particles found on the face of the Turin Shroud

We have studied optical properties (in optic and petrographic microscopy) of mineral particles (diameter > 1 μm) deposited on the surface of a small (≈ 1.4 mm height, 610 μm wide) sticky tape triangle corresponding to the Face area of the Turin Shroud (TS). All these particles were studied by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and their elemental compositions were analysed by X-ray microfluor...

On some Crystals of "Lapis Lazuli"

Due to its unique blue colour, lapis lazuli is used as an ornamental stone. Recently we obtained some dark blue 8 to 12 mm sized dodecahedral crystal from Afghanistan. Similar crystals have been described as crystals of lazurite [1]. The present investigation has been carried out in order to find the nature of these crystals. The colour of massive lapis lazuli is caused by lazurite and hauyne [...

Studies on the radiocarbon sample from the shroud of turin

In 1988, radiocarbon laboratories at Arizona, Cambridge, and Zurich determined the age of a sample from the Shroud of Turin. They reported that the date of the cloth's production lay between A.D. 1260 and 1390 with 95% confidence. This came as a surprise in view of the technology used to produce the cloth, its chemical composition, and the lack of vanillin in its lignin. The results prompted qu...

Blood on the shroud of turin.

By spectroscopic and chemical tests (conversion of heme to a porphyrin), we have identified the presence of blood in the alleged blood areas of the Shroud of Turin.
